And in the evening? You can return to your apartments, just steps from the sea, and enjoy the peace of the pine forest and the sound of the waves.
Isola del Giglio
Embraced by a wonderful emerald-green sea and surrounded by untouched, wild nature, Isola del Giglio is a true corner of paradise. Reachable by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano (56 km from Principina), the island will captivate you with its hidden coves, scenic trails, and three charming villages: Giglio Porto with its colorful harbor, Giglio Castello with its medieval walls, and Giglio Campese with its wide beach. Perfect for snorkeling, strolling through streets scented with broom flowers, or relaxing on postcard-perfect beaches. Ferries run regularly, and the journey takes about an hour.
Saturnia Hot Springs
Located in the heart of the Maremma, about 72 km from Principina, the Saturnia Hot Springs are a charming thermal spa that attracts visitors from all over the world. The sulfurous waters flow at 37°C year-round and have been renowned since Roman times for their beneficial effects on the skin, circulation, and respiratory system. You can choose between the famous Cascate del Mulino, where you can bathe for free in natural pools, or the thermal spa for a more exclusive experience. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking: gentle green hills, cypress trees, and lush nature. Perfect for a wellness day, and suitable for elderly visitors as well.
Pitigliano Village
Perched on a tuff cliff seemingly suspended in the air, Pitigliano is a jewel of art, history, and culture. Known as the “Little Jerusalem” due to its historic Jewish community, this medieval village offers truly unique experiences. Wander through its narrow streets to discover ancient cellars carved into the tuff, the 16th-century synagogue, the Medici aqueduct, and breathtaking views. The village is also famous for its DOC white wine and Jewish-Maremma traditional dishes. Located 60 km from Principina, Pitigliano is reachable via a scenic panoramic road. A visit at sunset is unforgettable, when the golden light illuminates the tuff houses.
Maremma Park
The Maremma Regional Park is a magnificent protected area with an extraordinary variety of natural environments. Also known as Parco dell’Uccellina, it begins right in Principina with its stunning wild beach. The park spans over 9,000 hectares of sea, pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, and hills. You can choose from numerous hiking, cycling, horseback riding, or canoeing trails, suitable for all levels. Birdwatching enthusiasts may spot herons and ospreys, while the more adventurous can discover medieval towers and deserted beaches. The Alberese Visitor Center (28 km away) organizes guided excursions.
Siena
Located in the heart of Tuscany, 90 km from Principina, Siena is one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval cities. Its vibrant center is the majestic Piazza del Campo, shaped like a shell, where the famous Palio takes place twice a year. Strolling through the medieval streets, you’ll discover the Duomo with its white and black marble, a Gothic masterpiece, historic palaces, and towers. The city is largely pedestrian-friendly and offers excellent restaurants where you can try pici pasta, ricciarelli, and panforte. Siena deserves a full day to explore at a relaxed pace.
Massa Marittima
Massa Marittima is a beautiful medieval town perched on the Metalliferous Hills, with a perfectly preserved historic center. The heart of the city is Piazza Garibaldi, dominated by the magnificent Cathedral of San Cerbone, one of the finest examples of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. The Mine Museum is worth a visit to discover the area’s ancient mining tradition, while the Torre del Candeliere offers breathtaking views over the Maremma all the way to the sea. The town center is full of artisan shops, wine bars, and restaurants where you can taste local specialties. Located 60 km from Principina, Massa Marittima is ideal for a day trip combining history, culture, and excellent cuisine.
